Primary sources

  • Browser Canvas and local image-processing APIs
  • On-device segmentation/inpainting helpers where available
  • User-provided images processed locally in the browser

Image cleanup results depend on the source image, browser support and model limits. Review exports before publishing, and only remove watermarks or marks you have the right to alter.

100% in-browser · your photo never leaves your device · always free

Works best on people/subjects. Fine edges (hair, translucency) may have minor artifacts.

Erase Cat provides processing tools only — please make sure you hold the rights to what you process. Everything runs in your browser and your photo is never uploaded. See our Terms.

Erase Cat's AI background remover is a free, no-upload alternative to remove.bg: upload an image and AI (a MODNet model) cuts out the subject and removes the background into a transparent PNG. Unlike remove.bg, the whole cutout runs 100% in your browser, so your photo is never uploaded. Full-resolution export is free, with no watermark, no credits and no signup. It works best on people and clear subjects.

Frequently asked questions

How is Erase Cat's cutout different from remove.bg?

Two core differences. Privacy: remove.bg uploads your image to its servers, while Erase Cat runs the cutout 100% in your browser and never uploads the original. Price: remove.bg's free tier returns a low-res preview (~0.25MP) and full resolution needs credits or a plan, whereas Erase Cat exports the full-resolution transparent PNG for free with no watermark and no credits.

Is the transparent PNG full resolution, and do I have to pay?

It's full resolution and completely free. You get a transparent-background PNG at the same size as your original — no watermark, no usage limit, no credits or account needed.

Does it cut hair and translucent edges cleanly?

It works best on people and clear subjects with good contrast against the background. Very fine hair and translucent edges (glass, sheer fabric) may show minor artifacts — a shared limitation of real-time on-device matting. The cleaner the background and the more distinct the subject, the crisper the edges.

Is my photo uploaded or kept?

No. The first run caches a ~40MB MODNet model in your browser, after which every cutout runs on your device — the image is never sent to a server, stored, or used for training.

Can I turn the cutout into products or graphics right away?

Yes. Once you have the transparent PNG you can drop it straight into print-on-demand products — stickers, tees, mugs — and there's a Printful link below the result. The exported PNG also drops cleanly into any layout or compression tool you already use.
